Senior Editor, Experimental Storytelling

The Atlantic is building a new team of journalist-designer-developer talent to amplify and extend our digital storytelling capabilities, anchored in highly visual and interactive experiences and experimentation with new and emerging story forms. This editor will help us to refine the team’s mission and vision, start shaping early projects, hire the rest of the team, and act in the longer term as both manager and skilled individual contributor.

The newsroom-run, story-driven team will have a two-part mission: (1) to work with top editors and reporters on crafting stories so ambitious and imaginative that they can be told only with visual and interactive capabilities; and (2) to help elevate all of our digital storytelling, using work we pioneer in special projects to inform the essential capabilities of the tools and templates owned by Product and Engineering.

Our ideal candidate is an experimental journalist at heart: inventive, collaborative, and enterprising. This person is a storyteller with a gift for using code and pixels to manifest ideas that others can’t see. The ideal candidate is a full-stack generalist who is fluent in HTML and CSS, dangerous with scripting languages including JavaScript and Python (the Django framework in particular), comfortable with database development, and dexterous in Photoshop or Sketch.

The Atlantic is undergoing a major expansion of its newsroom, digital platforms, and journalistic ambitions. Having just launched a comprehensive digital subscription model, we’re focused on helping new and existing readers to understand the value and power of the ideas, arguments and expertise that have animated our writer-driven publication since its founding in 1857.

Atlantic Media Values:

  • Force of Ideas: At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, and intellectual honesty to the ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity: Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.

Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
