Talent & Culture Director

Quartz seeks a Director to lead our newly formed Talent & Culture team. This person will be chiefly responsible for cultivating Quartz’s employee-first, high-performance culture, and will implement and manage policies and practices in three primary areas: Benefits and Compensation, Employee Relations, and Talent Acquisition. The Director will report to the General Counsel and VP, Corporate Operations, and will work closely with the other corporate business operations teams: Legal, Finance, and IT. This role is based in our New York City office.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

Benefits & Compensation

  • With the support of a to-be-hired benefits and payroll professional and a PEO, administer the company’s domestic and international packages, monitor pay practices and systems for effectiveness, and oversee semi-monthly payroll for all staff.

Employee Relations

  • Serve as a critical partner to the executive team and managers by supporting growth and development of all staff.
  • Oversee company performance reviews, management training, and culture building initiatives.
  • Guide and provide day-to-day employee relations support for management and staff.

Talent Acquisition

  • Together with the Corporate Recruiter and General Counsel and VP, Corporate Operations, build out Quartz’s recruiting and onboarding practices and procedures.
  • Together with the Corporate Recruiter, identify, hire, and successfully onboard the best in journalism and media talent.
  • Collaborate with the Quartz Talent Lab, a team on initiatives designed to cultivate new talent and develop career path/goals for current staff.

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate:

  • Deep knowledge of the core concepts of Human Resources, e.g., employment law, compensation management, organizational planning, leave agreements, etc.
  • Creative, nimble approach to the work, with the ability to intellectually engage in the conversations of a global business organization.
  • Passionate about people operations, with a knack for building and implementing functional processes.
  • Interest in and understanding of a wide range of work styles, from creatives to sales, and an innate ability to enable them to do their best work.
  • Resourceful, proactive, and independent in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • A track record of success as a collaborative partner to management, and experience optimizing talent within the organization.
  • Belief that high-quality journalism is fundamentally important, and have the desire to help it thrive.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • International experience and languages, as well as prior work in a startup or media organization are strong pluses.
