The Atlantic is seeking an experienced, ambitious editor to lead its foreign desk.
This journalist will oversee a team of reporters based in Washington, London and Paris; lead story-planning across a wide range of beats related to U.S. foreign policy and global conflict; and help build a team of reporters focused on the forces reshaping foreign affairs, global relationships, and democracy worldwide.
The ideal candidate will be a creative and independent thinker who is obsessed with global news, and adept at leading a geographically dispersed team of journalists. You should have impeccable editorial judgment, a sense of urgency about breaking news, a nonstop flow of original ideas, a keen understanding of how to assign and edit a second-day story on the first day, and a well-honed instinct for identifying the big questions underlying complex developing stories—including stories unfolding over a matter of hours, and those that span months and years. You should also be equipped to shape and edit complex magazine-style narratives. Excellent communication skills are a must.
