Ballast Research

Ballast Research (a division of National Journal) is a fast-paced, growing, and collaborative research and consulting firm based in Washington, DC. We work with government affairs professionals at the state and federal levels to help them understand how policymakers perceive of their advocacy efforts, and how they can improve those efforts.

The Ballast Research Fellowship is a one-year position that allows for exposure to a variety of projects, research methods, and stakeholders (including Fortune 500 clients and policymakers). Fellows will participate fully in the work and culture of the team.

State Research Fellows will work closely with the Manager of State Research, supporting and eventually running the quantitative, qualitative, and outreach work for up to three states throughout the year. Specific responsibilities for each state include:

  • Developing an outreach strategy. Conducting secondary research and informational interviews to scope the state and determine outreach framing, timing, and other logistics.
  • Developing outreach lists. Locating, compiling, cleaning, and tagging contact information from a variety of sources, to create a master outreach database.
  • Developing interview scripts and survey questions. Understanding and translating client needs and objectives into feasible research questions.
  • Executing an outreach strategy. Drafting, scheduling, and monitoring emails, as well as conducting targeted outreach through LinkedIn, cold calls, and personalized messages.
  • Trouble-shooting and course-correcting. Monitoring the quantity and quality of responses, then adjusting and doing supplemental work to fill gaps.
  • Assisting with interviews and analysis. Stepping in to conduct policymaker interviews as-needed, and analyzing broader insights gathered through the survey and interviews.
