Communications Manager

We are seeking an experienced communications professional to join The Atlantic communications team at its Washington, DC headquarters. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, the Manager will be part of a team of four dedicated to developing strategies and promoting the company, its staff, journalism, products, and events across all divisions.

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years PR/Communications/Journalism experience with an appreciation for news and print journalism. He/she will diligently maintain important internal and external relationships, devote strong attention to detail, thrive in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, and be able to work under deadline.

The Communications Manager responsibilities include:

  • Proactive pitching of daily reporting, videos and podcasts, the magazine, and The Atlantic’s events; 
  • Pitching and coordinating broadcast appearances for The Atlantic’s journalists, including managing the newsroom remote camera and radio studio;
  • Collaborating with the vice president and the overall team in strategic promotion of pivotal company initiatives, including events and new product launches;
  • Drafting communications including press releases and statements;
  • Building and maintaining press lists and compiling press coverage;
  • Seeking and securing brand building opportunities for The Atlantic’s leadership and journalists.

  • A can-do attitude and a willingness to learn, support, and collaborate with a fast-moving team
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and can manage projects independently
  • Strong internal communication skills 
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Strong attention to detail and an ability to multi-task
  • An ability to plan comprehensively, work both independently and collaboratively, and manage and prioritize projects to satisfy competing deadlines
