Editorial Strategist

Atlantic 57, the creative and consulting division of The Atlantic, seeks an Editorial Strategist to define our clients’ unique stories and develop strategic and creative ways to bring that story to audiences. We believe that any brand can become essential to its audiences by adopting the practices of leading news and media organizations. Editorial Strategists bring a journalistic mindset to achieving organizational goals. They are equally comfortable helping clients own their core issues and ideas as they are helping communications and marketing teams operate more like a newsroom.

The Editorial Strategist is part of Atlantic 57’s Editorial team, which includes journalists, editors, and strategists with decades of newsroom experience. Our team tells great stories for our clients and also helps our clients’ tell their own story at a world-class level and at scale. Our Editorial Strategists are valued thought partners to our clients and eager collaborators with the researchers, designers, engineers, and brand strategists that make up Atlantic 57’s multi-disciplinary teams. As many brands  build their own publishing operations and in-house editorial teams, our Editorial Strategists are their lead partner in doing so.

Ideal candidates embrace the practice of client service and offer analytical thinking, problem solving, and strong written and verbal communications skills. They also bring experience working in a newsroom as an editor, strategist, or product manager and/or experience leading strategic communications and marketing efforts for brands. Candidates with a non-traditional background, such as policy or business, and a deep, demonstrated interest in news or media are encouraged to apply as well.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to expansive, strategic projects, by serving as a thought partner to clients and a strong creator of client work
  • Apply journalistic principles and practices to a range of brands, from B2B, B2C, and mission-driven nonprofits 
  • Advise clients on how to build their own editorial and creative teams, from hiring the right people, to creating effective processes and workflows, to connecting content to business goals  
  • Define our clients’ goals, editorial themes, and communications efforts, in collaboration with Atlantic 57 brand strategists and research specialists
  • Lead training and coaching sessions with clients to help them understand and implement the editorial strategies we create
  • Identify opportunities to expand our partnerships and collaborate with client services teams to propose and pitch new engagements

Qualifications:

  • 4-8 years of experience working in a strategic role in news or media organizations, within the communications or marketing function for a brand, or a consulting firm  
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to write clear, organized strategy briefs and documents
  • A knack for presentation and a strong in-room client presence  
  • Operates independently in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • An unyielding attention to detail and dedication to accuracy
  • Strong organization skills with a strict adherence to deadlines 
  • A persistent curiosity for understanding the inner workings of different organizations and an obsession with media and communications
  • Exhibits strong ethics and journalistic integrity, reflecting The Atlantic’s core values
  • Experience working on strategic editorial functions, such as an audience growth strategy, an editorial product, strategic partnerships, or a brand messaging effort
  • Analytical mindset, with an ability to synthesize large amount of disparate data into clear insights and recommendations
  • Ability to understand and analyze brand research and audience engagement metrics and use those insights to inform editorial efforts
