Research Analyst, Ballast Research

Ballast Research provides strategic research services designed to help government affairs professionals identify and develop the most effective approaches to advocacy. We study organizations’ policy brand, which is a measure of an organization’s long-term reputation and influence among the powerbrokers of DC. We serve our clients through a quantitative benchmarking study, qualitative interviews, and other diagnostic tools that allow them to track and improve their Washington brand and ultimately enhance their approach to advocacy. Ballast Research is a division of Atlantic Media’s National Journal Group.

As part of the Ballast Research team, you will have the opportunity to build public speaking and presentation skills and to gain comfort with explaining research to both your colleagues and senior business executives. This position allows for rapid development and strengthening of research skills. Who the Research Analyst is:

  • Self-motivated, highly analytical, natural problem solver
  • Ability to identify key insights in large data sets (both quantitative and qualitative)
  • Interested in intellectually rigorous work focused on the business of Washington government affairs offices
  • A strong writer able to clearly frame issues for a variety of audiences
  • Knowledgeable researcher with experience conducting interviews and analyzing primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative data
  • An aptitude for, and interest in, Washington politics and policy

Responsibilities include:

  • This individual will collaborate with internal team members to help design and execute research initiatives, to understand effective advocacy in Washington.  These research initiatives will include primary research – both interviews with and surveys of senior policymakers in Washington, including Capitol Hill staff, Executive Branch staff, and Government Affairs Executives, as well as secondary research.
  • The analyst will process and synthesize large quantities of data to generate research-based insights, and contextualize and interpret those findings within larger ideas, topics, and trends, for an executive audience. The analyst will use these insights to generate highly-visual custom research reports that address each client’s unique needs and circumstances.

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience conducting research in a professional setting
  • Excellent writer with experience writing for a business or professional audience
  • Background in creating visual graphics of both quantitative and qualitative data
  • Excellent time management skills, including demonstrated proficiency at managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Outstanding client-service ethic and experience interacting with senior executives
  • High comfort level using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in a professional setting
  • 1-2 years’ post-undergraduate experience conducting applied research
  • Excellent academic record
